Lower Your Risk of Death: Drink Coffee, Says Latest NIH study
Posted by Steve on 5/18/2012 to Caffeinated News
Coffee drinkers are less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries and accidents, diabetes, and infections, according a study by researchers from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and AARP.

Drink coffee - live longer

These results from a large study of older adults were observed after adjustment for the effects of other risk factors on mortality, such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Researchers caution, however, that they can’t be sure whether these associations mean that drinking coffee actually makes people live longer.

Neal Freedman, Ph.D., Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, NCI, and his colleagues examined the association between coffee drinking and risk of death in 400,000 U.S. men and women ages 50 to 71 who participated in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study. Information about coffee intake was collected once by questionnaire at study entry in 1995-1996. The participants were followed until the date they died or Dec. 31, 2008, whichever came first.

The researchers found that the association between coffee and reduction in risk of death increased with the amount of coffee consumed. Relative to men and women who did not drink coffee, those who consumed three or more cups of coffee per day had approximately a 10 percent lower risk of death.

“Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in America, but the association between coffee consumption and risk of death has been unclear. We found coffee consumption to be associated with lower risk of death overall, and of death from a number of different causes,” said Freedman. “Although we cannot infer a causal relationship between coffee drinking and lower risk of death, we believe these results do provide some reassurance that coffee drinking does not adversely affect health.”

18,239 Pound Mayan Temple Is the World's Largest Chocolate Sculpture
Posted by Steve on 5/16/2012 to Double-Shot Reviews
At a caffeine content of, say 23 mg per ounce, we are talking about 6.71 million mg caffeine here!

Who built this thing?

The chocolate temple building team was lead by Chef Francois Mellet and Stephane Treand of Qzina Specialty Foods. The giant chocolate building is in the shape of the traditional Mayan temple, recognizable by its stair-stepped pyramid shape.

Chocolate pyramid

How did they do it?

Layer by layer. The molten chocolate was slowly poured into each level of the pyramid. The base is 10 x 10 square feet, with each of the ascending ten levels being just a little smaller than the previous. The top is capped with a rectangular temple, which brings the entire structure to six feet tall.

Mellet and his team carefully carved rows of tiny steps along with tiny temple climbers and guards, also made from chocolate. The top of the temple is even decorated with a tiny chocolate Mayan sculpture, set behind chocolate pillars.

The Guiness record-breaking sculpture will be on display at the Qzina Institute of Chocolate and Pastry in Irvine, California from June 4th until the end of the Mayan calendar – December 21, 2012. Don’t miss it if your travels take you to southern CA!

Those Are Marshmallow Clouds Being Friendly

So says Troy Kibodeaux about TeaMallows, in his review. Here are excerpts - you can read the whole article here.

TeaMallows review

“A while back I was lucky to have got to review some super caffeinated Coffee marshmallows. They were great! Now I have just acquired the latest from the crazy folks over at Caffex. Tea infused mallows! Want the benefits of drinking tea without all that pesky water and brewing? How about a boatload of caffeine?  This is probably the product for you then.”

“This ain’t no soothing cup of tea to wind down with, that’s for sure….”

“Once again Caffex delivers. They have a nice simple tea based mallow that delivers the kick of a premium coffee. These are fun and tasty and trust me they will wake you up. Don’t have time to brew some tea or coffee to get you going? Then chow down on one of these and you will be on your way.”

We - the crazy folks here - guarantee it!

Fill Her Up with Chocolate!

No, this is not what you think, naughties. Two British men from Ecotec found a new use for chocolate - to make biofuel. This is supposed to be progress? Not to us chocolate lovers!

Chocolate Love

The reality is not so bad. They used three tons of “waste” chocolate to produce 396 gallons of biofuel to fuel their drive from England to Timbuktu in the Sahara desert, a 4,473-mile journey. Their intent had nothing to do with chocolate per se, but rather to demonstrate “green” alternatives to fossil fuels and to actually make a “carbon-negative” trip.

Their idea saved an estimated 15 tons of carbon emissions compared to using conventional fuel. The biofuel was made by recycling “waste” chocolate (an oxymoron) – such as misshapen Easter eggs and bars that otherwise are sent to landfills. The large chocolate company produces 5,000 tons of waste each year (although they don’t’ say, it’s a fair bet we are talking about Cadbury). Chocolate is actually well suited for making biodiesel since it contains fat, which was added to recycled cooking oil, and sugar, which is distilled into ethanol used in the biofuel. The project helped the chocolate factory by using its waste, helped the local government by reducing landfill needs and helped the environment by reducing carbon emissions.

The demand for biofuels made from agricultural crops, such as corn, has risen sharply, but those fuels compete with using the crops for food. Biofuel, made from waste, is a superior way to achieve multiple environmental objectives.

The only question in my mind is what the real cost of that biofuel? Ecotec claims it’s $1.16 a gallon, but that assigns no value to the chocolate, waste or not. There is more here:

BevNerd Part 1 and 2: Enthusiasm and Energy!
Posted by MallowQueen on 5/23/2011 to Caffeinated News
BevNerdBevNerd has put amazing energy and enthusiasm into his review of our super-caffeinated marshmallows. It's not only the powerful effect of these innocent-looking puffs of confectionery craftsmanship--but their delicious taste that rings his bell.

He devoted two videos to describing these delightful treats. The first is about the packaging. Packaging is very important. The fact that each marshmallow is individually wrapped is different from how marshmallows are usually sold. They are usually thrown together in a bag and individual portions are not conveniently portable. BevNerd understands the drawbacks of how marshmallows are traditionally packaged.

Then he devotes his intelligence and skill to describing his reactions to the flavors. He's a great spokesperson for the product because of his dazzling energy and happiness. See what he has to say here:

NerdismComics Has Fallen in Love with Our Caffeinated Marshmallows
Posted by MallowQueen on 3/28/2011 to Caffeinated News
The Daily Nerdgasm, of NerdismComics fame, has just featured an article on our super-caffeinated marshmallows. They have done a fantastic job of describing the impact of these ferocious energy-zingers.

Nobody understands the needs of the up-to-all-hours nerd who is so involved in programming, gaming, or just packing their brains full of information, than we do. We have always been partial to the nerd within us all.

However, Christian Akins has brought the insights of the Nerd to new heights and depths. Revenge of the Nerds, indeed! With our action-packed mallows, those Clark Kents can easily turn into Supermen!

He has given our marshmallows a 9 out of 10 on the Nerdism Nerds Scale.

Here are some of other things he says: “We’ve made no secret about our love for caffeine infused marshmallows with our announcement of the Stay-Puft brand of caffeinated marshmallows, but Caffex has taken that love to a whole new level.

"The very first flavor to catch my eye was the Mocca Mallow, and boy did I make the right choice. I was suspicious at first if it would actually taste like a real mocha and I can confidently say that it tastes much better. In a perfect blend of chocolate and coffee flavor, the Mocca Mallow dazzles the senses.

"The next flavor is Java with a double espresso boost. Now I’ve never been an espresso drinker and I’ll admit to saying that this one caught me a little off guard. The taste is still delicious, but is much more strong. It’s definitely useful if you want a quick boost of energy and much more appealing than those 5-hour energy shots.

"The final flavor is the traditional Coffee Mallow, which was a very satisfying end to a journey of delectability. I love these marshmallows, plain and simple....”

Energy Drinks (ED) Junkie Grades Coffee Mallows for Their Kick!
Posted by MallowQueen on 3/21/2011 to Double-Shot Reviews
We're lovin' Troy's thought-filled review at EDJunkie.com! He calls it, "Those are marshmallow clouds being friendly." Here is just part of what he says:

"Mocca Mallows: These little squares are a dense rich treat. The scent is a nice chocolate and coffee and the taste is kind of like eating a rich dessert. It is almost like a java chocolate brownie. You can taste the espresso and the dark chocolate in here and there are also little “cocoa nibs” for a little texture. The hell with coffee and dessert. One of these gives you both in one delicious caffeine filled treat. No bitterness or aftertaste.  Grade: A."

...

"Kick/Ingredients: I’ll keep this short and sweet. It is like slamming a shot or 2 of espresso. It takes a few minutes to hit you but when it does it is a strong kick. These little things will have you awake and going full on. 1 is all you need. If you choose to eat 2 prepare to have your hair standing on end and a manic grin on your face as you will be over wired. I got a good 3 to 4 hours of blazin energy with no real crash to speak of...."

Review at ED Junkie

"Ok so I was really caught off guard by these. These babies are made with either coffee or espresso for their caffeine content and are also Kosher. They pack a whole lotta caffeine in a portable pack. The Mocca Mallow to top it off is one luscious dessert. You need to get some of these now. They taste great and a will get you going good. What else can you ask for?"

Love-fest of Reviews for Wake-up Mallows

Google Alert has found some fun and positive reviews for me so far on our energizing mallows:

ThisNext

“Plain old white marshmallows are ok, but these cool new Hyper-Caffeinated Coffee-Flavored Marshmallows are loaded with 200-280mg of caffeine each and made with real double espresso, coffee, and cocoa plus roasted cocoa bits. This three pack of extreme mallows comes with one of each: Mocha, Java, and Coffee.”

GreenHead

“There is enough caffeine in each to replace a cup of coffee or can be added to your morning brew to crank it to eleven.”

ICanHasCheezBurger

“Let’s get informative for a second here. From Foodbeast:

‘The Java puff contains 280mg of caffeine, with the Mocha and Coffee flavors crediting 200mg of caffeine into your system.

"Now you know why that guy has a giant smile on his face.  He hasn’t slept in five days.  He believes that marshmallow is about to transport him to a spaceship hiding behind the dark side of the moon.’”

“So behold the marsh-y, mallow-y healing powers of Hyper-Caffeinated Coffee-Flavored Marshmallows, your new ally in the fight against... actually, who are we kidding, they’re just hyper-caffeinated coffee-flavored marshmallows, and they’re now available online.

"Honestly, though, the name can only say so much. What you’re dealing with here is a three-pack of oversize Java, Coffee and Mocca mallows crammed with 200 to 280 mg of caffeine (and yes, they’re injected with real double espresso and coffee). To put that in perspective, feel free to think of these as the bite-size, awkwardly textured equivalent of taking about three shots of espresso.

"Sure, you could easily drop one of these in your hot chocolate for a little afternoon jolt... but let’s say somewhere between rolling out of bed and licking your bourbon-induced wounds, you’ve come to the conclusion that it’s either caffeine or showing up late to your shoe shine/press conference on the Governor’s Mansion lawn (you’ll tip extra).

"Pop one of these things, wait a few minutes and prepare for what could be the most hyperactive day since... ever.”

FoodBeast

“We’re looking at a three pack of oversized marshmallows that are crammed with both taste and caffeine.”

ThatsNerdalicious

“We’re no stranger to caffeinated marshmallows, but these babies contain a whopping 200-280mg of caffeine per marshmallow. An entire can of Red Bull only has 80mg.

Plus, each bag contains a Mocha, Java, and Coffee-flavored marshmallow. Drop one of these in a cup of hot cocoa and it will blow your mind. Drop it in an espresso drink and you might actually travel through time.”

All these reviewers show imagination, humor, and a great appreciation for our inspired products!
